What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? Plain-English Guide

Quick answer: Generative engine optimization (GEO) means making your website easy for AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI answers, to understand and quote. AEO (answer engine optimization) is the same idea: giving clear answers that search and AI tools can use. Nobody can guarantee that an AI will mention you, but you can make it much more likely. It costs $10 to $1,000+ a month for DIY tools, and agencies charge about $1,500 to $25,000 a month (most around $3,000 to $8,000).

Prices come from agency and software vendor pages, so treat them as a guide. Last checked: October 2026.

GEO, AEO and SEO: what's the difference?

  • SEO helps your pages rank in the list of search results.
  • AEO helps your page become the direct answer.
  • GEO helps AI tools mention and quote your business when someone asks them a question.

They overlap. Good SEO is the base, and GEO and AEO add a focus on clear answers and being easy to quote. See our comparison of SEO, AEO and GEO.

Is GEO real?

Yes. AI tools do cite websites, and some small sites are cited often. Search tools such as Bing's Webmaster Tools now show how often AI tools cited your pages. But the field is new, there are no guarantees, and some advice online is guesswork. We only list things below that make a site clearer for readers and tools alike.

What to do: a practical checklist

  1. Let the AI crawlers in. Make sure your robots file does not block bots like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Bingbot, and that your pages load without logging in.
  2. Answer the question first. Start each page with a short, plain answer, then explain. Use the question as the page title.
  3. Use real numbers and name your sources. Pages with clear facts, ranges and sources are easier to quote than vague ones.
  4. Cover your topic in depth. Several pages on connected questions work better than one page on everything.
  5. Add an FAQ with short answers to real customer questions.
  6. Set up structured data (schema). It tells machines what a page is: an article, a business, a FAQ.
  7. Keep pages fast and readable on a phone.
  8. Keep it up to date and show a date and an author.
  9. Get mentioned elsewhere. Reviews, directories and other sites that talk about you help AI tools trust you.
  10. Check results. Use your search and AI reports to see which pages are cited, and learn from them.

An optional extra is an llms.txt file, a short guide for AI tools. It is new and its effect is not proven, so treat it as a small bonus, not a fix. You can make one with our llms.txt generator and test your site with our website check.
