How Much Does an AI Receptionist Cost? (2026 Price Guide)

Quick answer: Most small businesses pay about $50 to $150 a month for an AI receptionist. The full range is $30 to $300 a month for software, and $250 to $1,000 a month if real people back it up. Extra costs like overage minutes and text-message fees can add to that, so read the "hidden costs" section before you sign up.
Prices on this page come from software vendors' own blogs and pricing guides, so treat them as a guide, not a quote. Check each provider's pricing page before you buy. Last checked: October 2026.
What is an AI receptionist?
An AI receptionist answers your phone, talks to the caller in a natural voice, answers simple questions, and either books an appointment or passes the call to you. It works at night and on weekends, and it can take many calls at once.
What does it cost? Three types
| Type | Typical price | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-serve AI app | $30 to $300 a month (most pay $50 to $150) | You set it up yourself. Often a set number of calls or minutes is included. | Owners who like to set things up and have fairly simple calls |
| AI with human backup | $250 to $1,000 a month | AI answers, and trained staff step in for harder calls or messages | Businesses where a missed or mishandled call is costly |
| Done-for-you setup | About $490 to set up, then $297 to $997 a month (agency prices vary) | Someone builds and runs it for you, often on a platform like GoHighLevel | Owners who want it working without learning the tools |
Hidden costs to check
- Extra minutes. Many cheap plans include a fixed number of minutes, then charge about $0.35 to $0.60 for each extra minute. A busy month can double your bill.
- Text messages. If it texts callers back, texting usually costs extra, often $20 to $60 a month for a typical local business.
- Setup fees. Some providers charge once to set up your phone number, your hours and your calendar.
- US texting registration. In the United States, businesses must register to send texts (called A2P 10DLC). This can come with its own one-time and monthly fees.
- Platform fees. Tools like GoHighLevel start at about $97 a month, before the usage fees above.
Is it worth it? A simple way to check
Here is an example, not a promise. Suppose you miss 10 calls a week, and 3 in 10 of those callers would have booked a $400 job.
10 missed calls × 30% × $400 = $1,200 a week in jobs you didn't get.
Even if the AI only wins back a part of that, a plan costing $50 to $150 a month is small next to it. Put in your own numbers: missed calls a week, the share who'd book, and your average job value. Use our free missed call calculator to try your own numbers.
If you rarely miss calls, or your calls are long and complicated, an AI receptionist may not pay for itself.
What to check before you buy
- Call recording laws. Some places (for example, several US states) require everyone on the call to agree to recording. Check that the provider tells callers that the call is recorded. This is not legal advice.
- Handing over to a human. Can it transfer to you, or take a message, when it is stuck?
- Your calendar. Does it connect to the booking system you already use?
- Contracts. Can you cancel any month, or are you tied in?
- A real test. Call it yourself with the questions your customers actually ask.
