Missed Call Text Back: How It Works, Cost and Legality

Quick answer: Missed call text back is an automatic text message sent to someone seconds after you miss their call, for example "Sorry we missed you. How can we help? Reply here." It costs about $97 to $497 a month for the software plus $30 to $300 in usage fees, or about $297 to $997 a month if an agency runs it for you. It is legal in most places if you follow the local texting rules, but those rules differ by country, so check yours.
Prices come from software vendor and agency blogs and are a guide only. Last checked: October 2026. Nothing here is legal advice.
Why it matters
When a customer calls a service business and nobody answers, many of them simply call the next business on the list. A text sent within a minute keeps the conversation going while the customer is still looking. Replying fast is the whole point; see our guide to the speed to lead 5-minute rule.
How it works, step by step
- A customer calls your business number and you don't pick up (or the line is busy).
- Your phone system notices the missed call.
- It sends a text from your business number within seconds, for example: "Hi, this is [Business]. Sorry we missed your call. What can we help with?"
- The customer replies by text.
- You, your team or an AI assistant continues the chat and books the job.
What does it cost?
| Setup | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Software you run yourself (such as GoHighLevel) | $97 to $497 a month | Plans start around $97 a month. Texting, calls and AI usage are charged on top. |
| Usage fees | About $30 to $300 a month | A typical local business sends 2,000 to 5,000 text segments a month, which is about $20 to $60 in messaging fees on the low end. |
| Done-for-you by an agency | About $490 to set up, then $297 to $997 a month | Covers the platform, hosting and support time. |
Extra one-off costs to expect: in the United States, businesses must register to send texts (called A2P 10DLC), which can have its own setup and monthly fee.
Is it legal?
This is general information, not legal advice. Rules depend on where you and your customer are.
- United States: Business texting needs A2P 10DLC registration. Consumer-protection law (the TCPA) limits marketing texts, so keep your message to answering the call, say who you are, and include a way to opt out such as "Reply STOP".
- Europe and the UK: Privacy and electronic communication rules apply. Keep messages to the enquiry itself and avoid marketing without consent.
- India: Businesses must register as a sender and have their message templates approved (called DLT registration) before sending commercial texts.
- Everywhere: Say who you are, don't send marketing to people who haven't agreed, honor opt-outs straight away, and keep records.
A simple worked example
This is an example, not a promise. If you miss 8 calls a week, 3 in 10 of those callers would have booked, and the average job is $300:
8 × 30% × $300 = $720 a week in jobs at risk.
If text back wins back even a part of it, a plan costing a few hundred dollars a month can pay for itself. If you hardly ever miss calls, it may not be worth it. Try your own numbers in our free missed call calculator.
